SHS STUDENTS TAKE PART IN MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING SEMINAR

The senior high school students attended the seminar entitled

"Understanding Mental Health and Well-being, Redefining Self-Care''.

It was held yesterday at the main building's auditorium.


The said seminar started with an opening prayer and the National Anthem, followed

by the opening remarks of Mr. Jose Procalla. The speaker, Mr. Filipino M. Salamat,

was introduced by the guidance counselor associate, Mrs. Mary Claire S. Tapel.

After the speaker introduced himself, he asked the students what common mental Illnesses they knew about.

Most students answered with depression and stress.


For the introduction to understanding mental health, Mr. Salamat shared that "duck syndrome"

is when students appear superficially calm and okay when they're not. After that, he explained that

emotional health is about how we think and feel, how we express our emotions, our coping strategies, etc.

He then mentioned the common types of mental problems, such as stress, anxiety, and depression


After the short discussion, an activity was given to the students.

Its purpose is for the speaker to know the statement of their mood depending on the total score they got.

Most of the students raised their hands on scores 6-10, which indicates a slightly sad mood.


Afterward, the speaker discussed what the students can do to practice and maintain good mental health.

Mr. Salamat gave examples of daily activities to promote self-care. This includes exercising regularly,

connecting with people, learning coping skills, journaling about distress, and many more.


Mr. Salamat's parting words were, "You should be grateful even though life is hard.

Don't let anxiety and depression take over the things you enjoy."
